Johann Christoph Bach (1642-1703)

December 6 is the birthday of Johann Christoph Bach (JCB, 1642-1703), German composer and organist of the Baroque period. Please note that this is not Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach, the son of musician and composer Johann Sebastian Bach (JSB, 1685-1750). In fact, JCB is the first cousin once removed, of JSB. JCB was also the uncle of JSB's wife, Maria Barbara Bach.

JCB had a reputation as a composer that was only equaled by that of first cousin JSB within the Bach family during his lifetime. He was organist at Eisenach and later a member of the court chamber orchestra there. His brother, Johann Michael Bach (JSB's father-in-law and Maria Barbara's father), was also a composer. Some of the works were later attributed to Johann Sebastian, but have since been recognized as written by JCB. One of the most famous works is the cantata Meine Freundin, du bist schön, based on the Song of Solomon. His eldest son, Johann Nicolaus Bach, was also a composer.

Despite his success as a musician, JCB experienced financial difficulties, which may have resulted in his not having been selected as the guardian of JSB when the latter's parents died. Sadly, JCB was heavily in debt when he died at Eisenach.
